Natriuretic Peptides

Natriuretic peptides are a family of naturally occurring proteins that play a major role in down-regulating the activity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system; regulating circulatory homeostasis; modulating cardiovascular system, causing natriuresis and vasodilatation. There are at least three major natriuretic peptides that have been discovered: atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP)- secreted largely by the atria; brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) - produced by the ventricles and C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP)- located in peripheral blood vessels.

It has natriuretic and vasodilatory effects and suppresses the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.

It is a powerful vasorelaxant and inhibitor of smooth muscle cell proliferation and may play a role in coagulation and fibrinogenesis by modulating endothelial cells.
